Check your property

  • Check that external doors, windows and accessible gates close and lock properly. Arrange repairs where needed.
  • Review entrance lighting and sightlines. Keep paths clear and avoid blocking fire escape routes.
  • Keep tools, ladders and valuables secure and out of casual view.

Review your routines

  • Agree a consistent locking-up routine with everyone in the household.
  • Review who holds keys or has access. Keep keys and access codes private; change access if compromised.
  • Check existing alarm or camera systems using the supplier's guidance. Use strong, unique passwords and available updates.

Plan ahead

  • Before time away, arrange appropriate property checks with someone you trust. Avoid public posts about an empty home.
  • Agree what to do if an alarm activates. Never enter if you suspect an intruder is present.
  • Identify repairs or security questions to discuss with a suitable professional. Keep any sensitive notes securely offline.

Review the premises

  • Review lighting, entrances and delivery areas. Keep emergency exits and access routes clear.
  • Secure valuable stock, equipment and sensitive records. Limit access to those who need it.

Agree daily procedures

  • Define opening and closing checks, with clear responsibility and safe arrangements for lone workers.
  • Review key, card and fob permissions. Remove access no longer needed and keep access credentials private.
  • Agree visitor and contractor sign-in, delivery handling and incident reporting procedures with staff.

Prepare for incidents

  • Check alarm and CCTV operation with the supplier. Review authorised access and privacy obligations before changing coverage.
  • Confirm who receives alarm notifications and the agreed escalation process. Do not ask staff to confront intruders.
  • Review security needs for closures, vacant periods or changing operations. Keep contact lists and site instructions securely offline.
